Yoga Means Union
Yoga has been in existence for over 5000 years. It originated in India and literally means 'yolk' or union. A man by the name of Patanjali recorded this ancient spiritual system into the Yoga Sutras, or limbs of yoga. Here in the west we have embraced yoga postures as the defination of all yoga. However, yoga postures or 'Hatha Yoga' are merely one part of the yogic teachings.
- Yamas:non-violence,non-lying,non-covetousness, non-sensuality, and non-possessiveness.
- Niyamas: purity, contentment, austerity, study, and surrender.
- Asana: Yoga Postures or Hatha Yoga
- Pranayama: Prana is the life force, energy, Ki, or Chi.
- Pratyahara: Withdrawal of the senses.
- Dharana (Concentration): Fixing the attention on a single object.
- Dhyana (Meditation): Intense contemplation of the nature of the object of meditation.
